Belgian Air Force Days 2023

Nei giorni 9 e 10 settembre 2023 si è tenuta la manifestazione “Belgian Air Force Days 2023”, nella base aerea di Kleine-Brogel. Erano 5 anni che l’aeronautica belga non organizzava questo airshow (solitamente svolto a cadenza biennale) a causa della pandemia, e questo digiuno forzato non ha fatto altro che aumentare la curiosità degli appassionati che sono accorsi numerosi durante tutto il weekend.

La base di Kleine-Brogel normalmente ospita tre gruppi di volo: il 31°, il 349° e il gruppo OCU (Operational Conversion Unit), tutti dotati di aerei F-16.

Per i “BAFD” sono però stati raggiunti da velivoli provenienti da varie forze aeree europee e non solo, sotto il motto “Join the new generation”, in una sorta di carrellata sulla storia dell’aviazione militare internazionale, dagli anziani ma affascinanti Spitfire fino a giungere ai caccia multiruolo di quinta generazione F-35. Quest’ultimi in particolare, nel prossimo futuro saranno legati in modo indissolubile alla base belga, in quanto si prevede che entreranno in servizio dal 2027.

La Belgian Air Force è infatti in fase di evoluzione, con il lancio del primo F-35A Lightning II alla fine di questo anno, e con la consegna del primo esemplare di MQ-9B SkyGuardian.

Tornando, invece, a rivolgere l’attenzione alla manifestazione aerea, si può dire che le condizioni meteo sono state ideali per poter godere al meglio dello spettacolo offerto. Nelle due giornate l’apertura è stata affidata al T-6 Texan pilotato da Stijn De Jaegere. Questo velivolo è un classico dell’aviazione, avendo servito come addestratore in svariate aeronautiche del mondo. Altri quattro Texan hanno volato invece in formazione.

Il programma delle pattuglie acrobatiche è stato particolarmente variegato, mostrandosi in varie forme. Ci sono state, infatti, le pattuglie composte da aerei ad elica, come i belgi “Red Devils”, sui loro SIAI Marchetti SD-260 e il gruppo civile “The Victors” formato da quattro Piper PA-28 Cherokee.

E poi ancora, il “Team Orlik” in rappresentanza dell’aeronautica polacca con gli addestratori PZL-130 Orlik, e i velivoli Extra 300LX dei “Royal Jordanian Falcons”, che spesso solcano i cieli delle manifestazioni aeree di tutta Europa.

A rappresentare la categoria delle pattuglie con aerei a reazione sono stati i francesi, con la “Patrouille Tranchant” e i suoi Fouga Magister, che si sono esibiti nella giornata di sabato; mentre gli Alpha Jet della “Patrouille de France” hanno dato bella mostra sul finire della seconda giornata della manifestazione.

Un capitolo a se lo scrivono gli F-16 del gruppo “Thunder Tigers”, in realtà composto da piloti del 31° gruppo “Tiger”. Non sono piloti dimostrativi ma veri e propri KeeBee (nomignolo dato ai residenti di Kleine-Brogel).

Ma non soltanto gli aeroplani possono disegnare forme nell’aria, infatti la Royal Air Force ha inviato il team “Falcons” di paracadutisti che, con i loro fumi e le loro bandiere “Union Jack” hanno saputo emozionare la folla.

Anche la categoria dei velivoli ad ala rotante ha avuto la sua ribalta con l’elicottero belga Agusta A-109 del team “Razzle Blades”, e i gruppi SAR di Belgio, su NH-90 e Repubblica ceca, su PZL W-3 Sokol. Questi ultimi due gruppi hanno dato un’ottima dimostrazione di come questi mezzi siano adatti a missioni di ricerca e soccorso.

Infine le esibizioni numericamente più presenti sono state quelle degli aerei solisti, e ce ne sono stati veramente di tutti i tipi.

Dalla Svezia sono arrivati due velivoli della “Swedish Air Force Historic Flight”, e che velivoli! I Saab Draken e Viggen, che con le loro forme particolari hanno saputo deliziare gli occhi del pubblico.

Direttamente dai giorni della “Battaglia di Inghilterra” ha solcato i cieli anche il Supermarine Spitfire, che ha entusiasmato anche per dei passaggi in coppia con l’F-16 belga “Dream Viper”.

Da notare che lo Spitfire in insegne RAF non fosse l’unico, essendocene anche un altro facente parte della “Royal Netherlands Air Force Historic Flight”.

Molto particolari sono state anche le performance dell’Extra 330 SC, pilotato da Kristof Cloetens, e dell’aliante Swift S1 LBX, del nostro compatriota Luca Bertossio. Tutti e due hanno dimostrato grandissima destrezza, sapendo disegnare traiettorie improbabili.

Certamente sono stati molto più “rumorosi” di alianti ed aerei acrobatici, i caccia che hanno esaltato le loro doti di velocità. Fra questi come non ricordare l’F-18 dell’aeronautica elvetica, l’F-16 Demo Team “Zeus” rappresentante della Grecia, l’Eurofighter spagnolo, l’F-35A Lightning II del Maggiore Kristin “Beo” Wolfe che ha degnamente rappresentato l’USAF, e il padrone di casa, F-16 “Dream Viper”. Quest’ultimo ha giustamente avuto il compito di chiudere in bellezza entrambe le giornate.

La domenica è stata impreziosita anche dai passaggi di un Airbus A-330neo della Air Belgium e di un Airbus A-330 MRTT.

Anche l’esposizione in statica ha discretamente arricchito l’airshow, con mezzi quali A400M, F-35, Mi-17,…e ovviamente gli immancabili F-16.

Interessante anche poter visitare gli hangar per la manutenzione e la verniciatura degli F-16 locali.

In conclusione, si può affermare che l’aeronautica belga è riuscita ad organizzare un buono spettacolo, puntando su un programma molto eterogeneo, che sicuramente non ha annoiato la folta platea di appassionati.

The “Belgian Air Force Days 2023” event was held on 9 and 10 September 2023, in the air base of Kleine-Brogel. It had been 5 years since the Belgian Air Force had organized this airshow (usually held every two years) due to the pandemic, and this forced stop did nothing but increase the curiosity of the enthusiasts who came throughout all the weekend.

The Kleine-Brogel base normally hosts three flight squadron: the 31st, the 349th and the OCU (Operational Conversion Unit) group, all equipped with F-16 aircraft.

For the “BAFD”, however, airplanes and helicopters from various European air forces and beyond joined them, under the motto “Join the new generation”, in a sort of overview of the history of international military aviation, from the always fascinating Spitfires up to the fifth generation multi-role fighters F-35. These last ones in particular, in the next future will be inextricably linked to the Belgian airbase, as it’s expected that they will enter service from 2027.

The Belgian Air Force is in the middle of an evolving process, with the roll-out of the first F-35A Lightning II at the end of this year, and with the delivery of the first MQ-9B SkyGuardian.

Returning to the air show, it can be said that the weather conditions were ideal to fully enjoy the show on offer. Over the two days, the opening was entrusted to the T-6 Texan piloted by Stijn De Jaegere. This aircraft is an aviation classic, having served as a trainer in various air forces around the world. Four other Texans flew in formation instead.

The aerobatic patrols program was particularly varied, showing itself in various forms. In fact, there were patrols made up of propeller planes, such as the Belgian “Red Devils”, on their SIAI Marchetti SD-260s and the civilian group “The Victors” made up of four Piper PA-28 Cherokees.

And then again, the “Team Orlik” representing the Polish Air Force with the PZL-130 Orlik trainers, and the Extra 300LX aircraft of the “Royal Jordanian Falcons”, which often fly through the skies of air shows Europewide.
Representing the category of patrols with jet aircraft were the French, with the “Patrouille Tranchant” and its Fouga Magister, who performed on Saturday; while the Alpha Jets of the “Patrouille de France” put on a good show at the end of the second day of the event.

A separate chapter is written by the F-16s of the “Thunder Tigers” group, actually made up of pilots of the 31st “Tiger” squadron. They are not demo pilots but real KeeBees (nickname given to the residents of Kleine-Brogel).

But not only airplanes can draw shapes in the air, in fact the Royal Air Force sent the military parachute display team “Falcons” who, with their smoke and their “Union Jack” flags, were able to excite the crowd.

The rotor wing aircraft category also had its spotlight with the Belgian Agusta A-109 helicopter of the “Razzle Blades” team, the Belgian SAR group on NH-90, and the Czech Republic SAR group on PZL W-3 Sokol. The latter two groups gave an excellent demonstration of how these vehicles are suitable for search and rescue missions.

Finally the most numerous performances were those of solo planes, and there were truly all kind.

Two aircrafts of the “Swedish Air Force Historic Flight” came from Sweden, and what aircrafts! The Saab Draken and Viggen, which with their particular shapes have been able to delight the eyes of the audience.

From the days of the “Battle of Britain”, the Supermarine Spitfire also took to the skies and thrilled with its passages with the Belgian F-16 “Dream Viper”.
It should be noted that the Spitfire with the RAF insignia was not the only one, there was also another one belonging to the “Historic Flight of the Royal Netherlands Air Force”.

The performances of the Extra 330 SC, piloted by Kristof Cloetens, and the Swift S1 LBX glider, of our Luca Bertossio, were also very special. Both showed great skills, knowing how to draw unlikely trajectories.

They were certainly much “noisier” than gliders and aerobatic planes, the fighters that exalted their speed qualities. Among these, how can we forget the F-18 of the Swiss Air Force, the “Zeus” F-16 Demo Team representing Greece, the Spanish Eurofighter, the F-35A Lightning II of Major Kristin “Beo” Wolfe who proudly represented the USAF, and the starring host, F-16 “Dream Viper”. The last one rightly had the task of ending both days in style.

Sunday was also enhanced by the passages of an Air Belgium Airbus A-330neo and an Airbus A-330 MRTT.

Even the static display discreetly enriched the airshow, with vehicles such as A400M, F-35, Mi-17,… and obviously the inevitable F-16s.

It is also interesting to be able to visit the maintenance hangars of the local F-16s.

In conclusion, it can be said that the Belgian Air Force managed to organize a good show, focusing on a very heterogeneous programme, which certainly did not bore the large audience of enthusiastic fans.
