Si è appena conclusa l’esercitazione internazionale “Astral Knight 2019”, organizzata dalle United States Air Forces in Europe ( USAFE ) nella base aerea di Aviano, in Italia, e in altre località in Croazia, Germania e Slovenia dal 3 al 6 Giugno 2019.
Il 2019 è stato il primo anno in cui si è svolta l’Astral Knight, ma sono in programma nei prossimi anni delle nuove edizioni che includeranno più alleati e partner NATO.
Astral Knight 2019 è un addestramento multinazionale congiunto che ha coinvolto sia il personale militare degli Stati Uniti che i membri dei servizi di difesa aerea e terrestre di altri tre paesi quali Croazia, Italia e Slovenia.
Questa esercitazione multinazionale ha come scopo di difendere zone chiave con l’uso di un Sistema di Difesa Aerea e Missilistica Integrato (IAMDS, Integrated Air and Missile Defense System). L’addestramento ha coinvolto una combinazione di operazioni di volo e di scenari assistiti ed elaborati da computer.
Il sistema IAMDS consiste nell’integrazione di assetti aerei e missilistici al fine di proteggere gli interessi nazionali, le forze di terra e ottenere così la libertà d’azione impedendo ad una forza nemica di usare a sua volta delle proprie armi aeree e missilistiche. La necessità di testare ed esercitarsi nell’uso di un sistema di difesa integrato è cruciale in un ambiente in continuo cambiamento. Questa esercitazione mira a migliorare il comando e il controllo dell’integrazione, del coordinamento e dell’interoperabilità delle capacità aeree, terrestri e marittime e delle operazioni incrociate, in questo sistema di difesa integrata aerea e missilistica.
In un ambiente in cui molti stati del Medio Oriente ed Europa dell’Est stanno rapidamente sviluppando emergenti capacita’ di minaccia aeree e missilistiche grazie a nuovi sistemi di aerei con equipaggio e non, missili da crociera stealth, sistemi d’arma ipersonici e missili balistici avanzati, è necessario assicurare un sistema integrato di difesa missilistica e aerea il più efficiente possibile.
Per l’esercitazione “Astral Knight 2019” sono stati rischierati ad Aviano anche 12 F-35 statunitensi.
Due cenni sugli illustri ospiti arrivati dalla base aerea di Hill, nello Utah: il 421° Fighter Squadron (Gruppo Caccia), parte del 388° Fighter Wing (Stormo Caccia), è uno dei piu’ conosciuti dell’USAF, gia’ molto attivo negli anni ’40 e pluridecorato. Deve il suo soprannome, “The Black Widows” ( le “vedove nere” ) al fatto che nel secondo conflitto mondiale utilizzava il caccia notturno Northrop P-61, che aveva lo stesso nome. Il reparto si è poi fatto valere in Vietnam, nella guerra in Iraq e successivamente in vari rischieramenti in tutto il mondo, a supporto di varie operazioni. Questo gruppo, tra l’altro, nella primavera del 1990 era stato gia’ rischierato in Italia e precisamente a Ghedi, quando volava con gli F-16C.
Questo è stato il loro primo rischieramento in Italia con gli F-35, con lo scopo di effettuare anche missioni di addestramento congiunte con gli F-35 italiani, che hanno recentemente raggiunto nel Novembre 2018 la Capacità Operativa Iniziale (IOC, Initial Operational Capability). Gli F-35 dell’USAF effettueranno inoltre altre missioni di addestramento in Europa, nell’ambito del cosiddetto “Threat Security Package”.
Un passaggio a sorpresa ad opera del B-52H dell’ USAF durante il Media-Day del 4 Giugno.

“Astral Knight 2019”
The international exercise “Astral Knight 2019”, organised by the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) at Aviano air base in Italy and at other locations in Croatia, Germany and Slovenia from 3 to 6 June 2019, has just ended.
2019 was the first year in which Astral Knight took place, but new editions are planned in the coming years that will include more NATO allies and partners.
Astral Knight 2019 is a joint multinational training involving both U.S. military personnel and members of the air and ground defense services of three other countries such as Croatia, Italy and Slovenia.
This multinational exercise is intended to defend key areas with the use of an Integrated Air and Missile Defense System (IAMDS). Training has involved a combination of flight operations and computer-assisted scenarios.
The IAMDS system consists of the integration of air and missile assets in order to protect national interests, ground forces and thus achieve freedom of action by preventing an enemy force from using in its turn its own air and missile weapons. The need to test and practice the use of an integrated defence system is crucial in a rapidly changing environment. This exercise aims to improve the command and control of the integration, coordination and interoperability of air, land and sea capabilities and overlapping operations into this integrated air and missile defence enterprise.
In an environment where many states in the Middle East and Eastern Europe are rapidly developing emerging air and missile threat capabilities through new systems of manned and unmanned aircraft, stealth cruise missiles, hypersonic weapon systems and advanced ballistic missiles, it is necessary to ensure an integrated air and missile system as efficient as possible.
For “Astral Knight 2019” exercise, also 12 US F-35s were deployed to Aviano.
A couple of notes on the important guests that came from Hill AFB, Utah: the 421st Fighter Squadron, part of the 388th Fighter Wing, is one of the most famous USAF units, already very active in the ’40s and multi-decorated. It owes its nickname, “The Black Widows”, to the fact that in World War II it flew the Northrop P-61 night fighter, which had the same name. The unit then distinguished itself in Vietnam, during the Iraq War and subsequently in various deployments all over the world, in support of various operations. This squadron, among other things, in the spring of 1990 had already been deployed to Italy, to Ghedi, when it was flying with the F-16C.
This was their first deployment to Italy with the F-35s, with the aim of carrying out also joint training missions with the Italian F-35s, that have recently reached in November 2018 the Initial Operational Capability (IOC). The USAF F-35s will also carry out other training missions in Europe, as part of the so-called “Threat Security Package”.
